About the Mary Flewellen Foundation
The Mary Flewellen foundation was established by the Flewellen family under the leadership of Kaye Flewellen. She named it in honor of her late mother, Mary Flewellen.
Described as a trailblazer, Mary founded Flewellen’s Hair Salon in 1970. Just as she was starting her business, she lost her husband, and was widowed with five children. She persevered and she always described the support of her community as the source of her inspiration. As a result, she worked tirelessly in her community.
As a young girl Mary picked cotton in her hometown of Winnsboro, LA. There she met a local hairstylist that was also a sale representative for the Madame CJ Walker brand. This encounter inspired her immensely and gave her a new aspiration. As soon as she came of age, she moved to Dallas to attend the Madame CJ Walker Beauty Academy.
Throughout her life, her love for the beauty industry was palpable. She credited the beauty industry for taking her out of the cotton fields and she was extremely grateful and passionate for her work. As well, Mary was a devout Christian, community activist and philanthropist. As a result of her philanthropic efforts, the Mary Flewellen orphanage in Bizana, South Africa was named in her honor.
Inspired by their late mother, Kaye and her family's, inaugural efforts will focus on the first pillar -giving back to the industry that has given so much to their family.
